Welcome
The Center for Automotive Research conducts research and coordinates instructional programs aimed at preparing the graduate students to solve practical problems by using fundamental knowledge in many engineering disciplines.
Mission statement
To conduct interdisciplinary research and coordinate instructional programs in the automotive area with demonstrated potential benefit to the State's economy.
Organization
Director: Naeim A. Henein
Faculty Members: Professors N. Chalhoub (ME), Ming-Chia Lai (ME), M. Jansons (ME), O. Samimi Abianeh (ME).
Key area of responsibility
To conduct basic and applied research in select automotive areas, and to obtain external funding in support of research. This in addition to teaching a regular load of courses in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
Research
Combustion, performance, fuel economy, emission controls, friction and wear, and simulation of automotive engines, alternate and renewable fuels, and biofuels.
Infrastructure
The center is self-supported from external funds obtained by the director in cooperation with the faculty. All the work is done by the faculty and graduate students.
Interaction with other divisions
Most of the interaction is with the chemical engineering and electrical and computer engineering departments, physics and chemistry departments.
Advisory body
Scientists and engineers from the local automotive industry.
Facilities
Ten fully instrumented test cells, including a microprocessor-controlled cold room and optically accessible single cylinder engine. Laser based diagnostic equipment, and high-speed data acquisition systems.
